Ongoing Projects > Cattle Program

Mozambique is ideal cattle country in the non-tsetse fly areas and the original African has a reputation for being the best natural stockman in the world. SDR is currently in the process of acquiring 12,000—20,000 hectares of non-utilized rural land in the Inhambane Province. This project will start with 500 cows, employ local area personnel and procure the mother cows from other rural Mozambican areas. SDR has already received a commitment for over $20,000 to ship registered Angus embryos and semen to raise Angus Bulls to further the beef quality of the herd.

The cattle operations will be developed into a vertically integrated enterprise that will encompass co-op opportunities for independent Mozambican stockman. Their operation will have a chance to help the Mozambican balance of trade in support of generous EU quotas for African grown beef.

The area planned for this program was once the domain of many species of antelope whose populations are now devastated because of illegal poaching for “bush meat”. This area in the Inhambane Province has been denuded of many native animals. SDR’s vision is that the antelope population will re-establish itself alongside our cattle and small grain farms with the conservation practices we plan. Furthermore, by protecting the native species we can create game viewing opportunities that will give rise to an eco-tourism destination on this beautiful Savannah.
