Ongoing Projects > Grain Farming

In the same region where Sociedade de Desenvolvimento Rural (SDR) has started its Cattle Ranching Project, a Small Grain Project is also underway. The Small Grain Project will benefit local communities two-fold. First, it will serve as a viable and constant food source for the area. Currently Mozambique is a net-importer of small grains; with the amount of arable and fertile land this shouldn’t be the case. Creating a food source other than local wildlife will serve to benefit the local ecosystem and promote conservation, which is SDR’s mission. The second important contribution of the Small Grain Project is it will allow for the production of locally produced “feed” for cattle once they have been weaned. In Phase 2 of the Cattle Project we envision that local cattle raisers will create a cooperative where all of the cattle are fed together. This plan would not be feasible without locally produced small grains as the distance from a market is too great to support transport.
