Projects > Sinave Flora & Fauna Project
The Sinave Park is located in the northwest corner
of the Inhambane Province in Mozambique. SDR is
currently working with the provincial and national
governments to relocate and manage indigenous game
to this park. This area is an important cornerstone
to the success of the animal migration corridor
which runs from the Transfrontier Reserve Project
in the south, to the Gorongosa National Park in
central Mozambique. SDR has proposed the relocation
of 500 native species of plains animals to be moved
from the overstocked game conservation areas in
Zimbabwe to the Sinave Park. The animals would be
procured with funds from MCO, a non-profit conservation
organization based in the U.S.
The Sinave Park was denuded of many species of animals
during the war years; it now has a team of dedicated
Mozambican conservation officers that work to revive
these populations. SDR proposes to manage a buffer
zone in a 5-10 KM swath adjoining the Park to reduce
“bush meat” poaching. We will fund support for the
staff, and the construction and rehabilitation of
existing facilities. It is important to protect
the populations of native species such as Nyala
and other small antelope NOW. Because of the previously
uncontrolled and illegal “bush meat” trade, these
beautiful animals are in danger of disappearing
in the region, as the larger antelope have.
SDR’s conservation efforts in the Sinave Park will
not only help to preserve the very unique flora
and fauna of the area, but will add to the eco-tourism
opportunities for the local human populations as
well.
